Lace Wig 101

Frontal

Frontal hair pieces allow more versatility when styling your hair for several reasons. Frontals are made with either a silk base or a lace base to closely mimic the scalp. ... You can also pull your hair into a high bun, ponytail, or other pulled back hairstyles without it looking as if you are wearing a wig or weave.

Closure

A closureis not a wig but an attachment used to close a weave without the use of the natural hair. This is usually sewn in along with weaving or making a custom wig-by hand. There are however larger closures being made these days that are half the size of a frontal.

Duration of install

What may work for me may not work for you. What may work for a client may not work for you. Everyone skin and body is uniquely different. You may have dry skin, oily skin combustion skin or sensitive skin. You may sweat more in your t zone or head more someone else. All these affect how long your install will last as well as maintenance. Example my lace install can last 1-2 weeks tops. I’ve had clients left their install in for a whole month!

Your install should generally last 1-3 weeks But should not exceed 3 weeks!! Duration of install maybe shorten due to really high humid weather. Leaving your install in for more than 3 weeks will cause your hairline to become built up with dirt, oil and adhesive. Over time this will clog your pores and in return will cause you to breakout around your hairline. Exceeding more than 3 weeks without proper care can also cause hair loss around the hairline.

Every glue is not suitable for everyone as some glues are harsher than some and will cause allergic reactions if you have sensitive skin.

Different kind of adhesive

◦ Acrylic-based glue: This can keep its hold for 1-3 weeks at a time. You can only apply a thin layer because it’s so strong. You should do a skin test on your forearm before using it on your scalp, so as to make sure that you’re not allergic. Blue Moon Beauty Super Lace Wig Glue is an acrylic adhesive.

◦ Water-based glue: This is a white glue which becomes clear when dry. It will give a hold for 1-3 weeks and is recommended for people with sensitive skin who might have an allergic reaction to other glues. You apply it with a brush, or by squeezing it out of a bottle.

◦ Lace front wig tape: This is a semicircular piece of tape adhesive that you attach to your skin. The tape is clear, so as not to be noticeable. Supertape is one brand of wig tape.

◦ Silicone bonding adhesive: This is a waterproof adhesive that can hold for 2-4 weeks. You first should apply skin protector before applying the adhesive. Apply the bonding adhesive both to your skin as well as to the lace wig, and adhere the wig to your skin. Walker Tape’s Soft-Bond is a silicone-based bonding adhesive, that gives a hold for 1-3 weeks.

It is essential to get a cap color that is similar to the color of your scalp. The types of lace and cap color are critical because they play a significant role in how your lace frontal will lay and appear against your scalp.

Customizing

The key to achieving a natural looking hairline with a lace frontal is properly customizing and installing your hair.

Bleaching the knots is imperative to making the lace on your frontal blend with your scalp.Knots are tiny little specks at the root of the hair extension that can look like small dots on your scalp if you do not bleach them. When bleaching the knots turn your frontal inside out.

Use tweezers to pluck the front of the hair to create a more natural looking hairline.

No one’s natural hairline looks like a hard edge line, and this step will help you achieve a more natural look.

After install

Avoid moisture for 48hrs. Secure edges by using our Edge saver headbands. Avoid getting hairline wet. If glue starts to get sticky around the hairline, blow dry hairline on cool until adhesive drys.
